A first meeting of the OLPC Vietnam developers will be organized in Hanoi on the 5th of June starting from 2pm until 6pm. The meeting will be hosted by CNF (Campus Numérique Francophone)

The tentative schedule for the meeting is as follows:

- 14h00-14h30 : Report of Vung Vieng OLPC deployment experiment (Serge Stinckwich)
- 14h30-15h30 : Sugar development platform presentation + XOs demonstrations

- 15h30-16h00 : EToys demonstrations (Serge Stinckwich)

- 16h00-18h00 : Discussions about OLPC-Vietnam

If you want to talk/demonstrate something related to OLPC and/or Sugar, you are welcome to come and propose a topic.

The morning, if you wish to, you may come to the CNF, from 10h00 to 12h00, to get Sugar on a Stick (based on Fedora 13) or Trisquel Toast (Sugar ready environment based on Ubuntu 9.04) installed on a USB key (minimum 1 GB) or installed as dual boot on your computer. This is the best way to test the Sugar environment with your own children or your young brothers/sisters.

This OSM event, hosted by CNF-AUF, will be the first one to be celebrated in VietNam. Among its activities it has been arranged an OpenStreetMap workshop and a Mapping party. ¡Mapping and activities are free!

When? Saturday 18th July, 2009, starting from 10h00 with the workshop, going through (free) lunch, then mapping til 17h00, before entering the data in OSM.

LTSP stands for the Linux Terminal Server project. It is a technology which ables several users to work on a same computer (the LTSP server) through connected terminal clients (the LTSP network). Similar technologies (requesting special equipment hardware) exist in the Windows environment, but LTSP under GNU/Linux makes it very cost effective as no special hardware is necessary other than ordinary network components.

After nearly one year of an experimental LTSP deployment, involving one Core 2 Quad (4 GB RAM) server installed with Ubuntu 8.04 serving up to 16 terminal clients, the Campus numérique francophone of Hanoi is launching its first hands-on LTSP short training course (in Vietnamese) on saturday 18th April 2009 (see details in Vietnamese here).

This first course of 3.5 hours should be sufficient for providing GNU/Linux users the ease of installing themselves a small LTSP network for their own purpose afterwards.

The LTSP technology, associated with Ubuntu, makes it an user-friendly experience, even for GNU/Linux beginners (not complete beginners though, but who are at ease with using computers), allowing them to recycle old computers for e.g. building up an internet-connected network in small libraries, associations, at home, etc.

Now there’s a way to convert native ODF documents, thanks to HanoiLUG volunteer JC you can now convert document from ABC and VNI font to unicode. It’s still a command line tool, but it is very easy to use. More information on here http://www.hanoilug.org/dokuwiki/projects:ovniconv.

If you are a Ubuntu user you can get it by using hanoilug repository.

We are looking for someone to package it for Fedora and other distribution. It would also be nice to have someone who can take care of the Fedora repository.

We worked again on the Intel donated server last saturday. In fact we didn’t work that much but we got the following working :

- Traffic shaping with wondershaper, well it’s ain’t big success so far we have to get better control over what we can do with it.
- The script that will enable rsync and wget to download repositories of Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian

And we ate pizza too..

Some hanoilug members gathered last Saturday to work on the Server Donated by intel. This server is supposed to become an official mirror for linux repositories for vietnam.

For now it is called “virror” (vietnam Mirror)

We have the base install, some virtual servers, the basic internal networking, the next step is finish the syncing, do the traffic shaping then the put the box at Netnam, who is kindly donating the bandwidth and the place to host it

For the record the machine spec are :

• 2*Quad-core Intel Xeon Processor E5335 (2*4MB L2, 2.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB)
• MB Intel S5000VSA4DIMM
• 5*250GB SATA
• 2*1GB FBDIMM DDR2 533MHz ECC

Sau một thời gian dài bận rộn, tôi đã thu xếp để ít nhất trong 1 tháng tới vừa dành tâm sức để giải quyết bộ gõ Tiếng Việt (input method) cho Ubuntu sử dụng Scim, vừa có thể hội hè, tiệc tùng với HanoiLUG. Thực sự tôi mong muốn điều này từ lâu, nhưng giờ mới thực hiện được.

Đã có một số giải pháp tương tự và có sẵn cho Linux như x-unikey, xvnkb nhưng đứng dưới góc độ là người dùng văn phòng, tôi chưa hài lòng lắm về tính ổn định. Đã có thời điểm tôi phải chấp nhận học cách gõ VIQR. Đến thời điểm hiện tại, sau khi vượt qua được sự khó chịu, bức bối vì lúc nào cũng phải bỏ dấu ngay sau nguyên âm cũng như không thể hủy nếu bỏ dấu nhầm… thì gói m17n-telex (do anh JC đưa lên kho của HanoiLUG) là tương đối tốt.

Tuy nhiên, với đa số những người dùng Linux chưa có kinh nghiệm như xếp của tôi, đồng nghiệp của tôi, bạn bè tôi… thì nhu cầu có một bộ gõ thuận tiện như Unikey trên Windows là hết sức cấp thiết. Nhân việc đã có thảo luận trước đó về vấn đề này, tôi muốn tận dụng 2 dịp sau để chúng ta đi tiếp tục hiện thực hóa dự án bộ gõ tiếng Việt đã được đề xuất trên wiki của HanoiLUG:

1) Cafe thứ Sáu: gặp gỡ hàng tuần của HanoiLUG ở Liễu Giai. Hôm nay 14/3 cũng chính là Thứ Sáu, nên theo thông lệ tôi sẽ đến từ 18h (đến 19h thì tôi phải đi)

2) Seminar: chiều mai 14h Thứ Bảy tại CAI-IFI (Tạ Quang Bửu)

Với các nội dung chính:
- Xác định mục tiêu: bộ gõ m17n hiện nay chưa tốt ở chỗ nào? Còn thiếu những tính năng nào?
- Lựa chọn phương án: Đã có những giải pháp dành cho SCIM nào rồi? Tốt đến đâu?
- Chuẩn bị tài lực, tiền lực, vật lực: cần đến đâu? lấy từ đâu? Ai có thể tham gia?
- Lên kế hoạch thực hiện: với các milestone cụ thể.

Tôi và hai đồng nghiêp nữa đã thu thập một số tệp MIM để dùng thử, cũng như mã nguồn của x-unikey, vietpad, avim để nghiên cứu. Mong nhận được sự tham gia ý kiến cũng như góp sức của tất cả các anh chị để chúng ta có thể giải quyết xong vấn đề về bộ gõ cho Linux. Nếu làm đủ nhanh, chúng ta có thể đóng gói bản đầu tiên trước khi Ubuntu 8.04 bước vào giai đoạn freezing để xuất xưởng vào tháng 4 tới.

Các anh chị khác nếu chưa có điều kiện tham dự 2 buổi trên, vẫn có thể đóng góp qua trao đổi trên mailing list hoặc wiki. Chúng tôi sẽ cố gắng cập nhật các thông tin mới.

Since Saturday November 3rd, 2007, David and I have been testing a terminal server and thin-client setup, using Ubuntu and Edubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). Our first test with Edubuntu server LTSP, on Saturday November 10th, was successful and shows how easy it is to set up painlessly one terminal server and several thin-clients. Testing will continue next Saturday, 17th November. You can read more details and view two pictures here.
